Clutches and Transmissions

The vehicle’s transmission, be it automatic or manual, is responsible for converting power according to each gear you select whilst driving to the drive shaft, differential and ultimately to the wheels.

This complex piece of automotive machinery attaches your automatic or manual gear shifter to the engine and as you shift gears, the transmission or gearbox adjusts the engine’s power output. A very important facet of your vehicle as having your transmission working optimally determines how your car responds to the gear chosen while driving.

Manual transmissions or gearboxes were the first transmission versions commonly found in passenger vehicles, until later when automatic versions became popular. As the name suggests, this version uses an automated method and a more sophisticated device called a torque convertor. Opposed to a clutch that manual transmissions or gearboxes use, to respond to the gear selections.

At Rockingham Automatic & Manual Transmissions, we are very experienced at working with the oldest types of clutch driven transmissions and gearboxes, right up to modern computerised transmission systems. Keeping our team of skilled mechanics up to date with the latest information and technology in the ever-changing automotive field, is a passion of ours and a direct benefit to customers.

Differentials

A modern passenger vehicle’s differential is responsible for transferring the various quantities of torque or power from the engine via the transmission and down towards the wheels. There are many varieties of differentials according to the various types of vehicle’s make and model and their primary uses.

Starting off quite basic, differentials have evolved with the advances in modern automotive technology and on today’s market there are some quite unique versions. These include differentials that are used on the US made Hummer’s, that can adjust the amounts of torque or power to a vehicle’s wheels according to the access and traction available.

The position of the differential in your vehicle will be determined by whether your vehicle is front or rear wheel drive or 4-wheel drive. 4-wheel drives vehicles general have at least two differentials.

Automotive tip

Whilst driving your vehicle, if you begin to hear the slightest of noises or feel the slightest of grinding vibrations (without you doing the gear grinding), coming from underneath the car shortly after gear changes, then it is a good idea to talk to us about what is going on.

Catching a problem with your differential early is the best method to avoid being stuck on the side of the road or at worst in the middle of nowhere. If your differential breaks, it’s a high chance you will need a tow truck to take your vehicle to the mechanics!
